Giovanni Battista Garove or Garovi (* 1624 in Bissone ; † after 1690 in Berlin ?) Was an Italian - Swiss plasterer of the early Baroque .

Life

Giovanni Garove was the son of Simone Garove, a plasterer from Bissone. Hedwig Eleonora von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf , the wife of King Karl X. Gustav , called him to Sweden , where from 1662 he built Drottningholm Palace near Stockholm . From 1667 he designed the interior and the facade together with his brother Carlo Garove. In the years 1672–1673 he created nine stucco ceilings in the palace of Major General Thomas van der Noot in Stockholm.

From 1675 he lived in Germany, where he became known as Caroveri . The relationship between Queen Hedwig Eleonora and her German relatives certainly played a role; her mother was Maria Elisabeth , daughter of the Saxon Elector Georg I. 1677–1679 he worked in Neu-Augustusburg Castle in Weißenfels , where his stucco decorations have been preserved in two rooms and in the castle chapel.

In 1679, Garove worked together with Bartolomeo Quadri from Agno in Christiansburg Castle in northeast Thuringia . In 1681 he made stucco ceilings in the old trade exchange in Leipzig and in 1682 together with Giovanni Simonetti in the Great Staircase of the Berlin City Palace (burned out in February 1945; a fragment of it is exhibited in the Kunstgewerbemuseum Schloss Köpenick ). From 1683–1684 he created stucco work in the ballroom as well as in the reception and living rooms under Duke Friedrich I of Saxony-Coburg-Altenburg in Gotha Castle Friedenstein .

Together with Bartolomeo Quadri 1683–1687 he then realized stucco work in the castle church in Eisenberg , which is considered the most magnificent baroque church in Thuringia . At Köpenick Palace in Berlin he created 29 stucco ceilings together with Giovanni Simonetti from 1684 to 1690, including the one in the coat of arms hall.
