Giovanni Gumiero

Giovanni Gumiero (born July 8, 1955 in Rome ) is an Italian admiral . Under his command, international naval organizations operated against piracy off the coast of Somalia .

Military career

Gumiero completed officer training at the Accademia Navale from 1975 to 1979 . He then served on various submarines ( Toti , Bagnolini, Marconi, Romei, Sauro ) and ships ( Danaide , Vittorio Veneto ). From 1986 to 1987 he commanded the submarine Romei , from 1989 to 1991 the submarine Sauro , from 1993 to 1994 the corvette Danaide (participation in Operation Sharp Guard in the Adriatic Sea) and from 2001 to 2002 the cruiser Vittorio Veneto .

On land, Gumiero served in the naval command in Santa Rosa near Rome, in the submarine command in Taranto , in the NATO Atlantic Command SACLANT in Norfolk , USA , as well as in the admiralty and general staff of the armed forces in Rome. Gumiero completed the Admiral Staff Course of the Italian Navy and the Command Academy of the Italian Armed Forces . From 2007 to 2008 he was in command of the mine forces in La Spezia .

Giovanni Gumiero was promoted to One Star Admiral ( Contrammiraglio, Rear Admiral lower half , OF-6) on January 1, 2008 . On July 4, 2008 he took command of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 . By the end of 2008 he commanded on board his flagship Luigi Durand de la Penne , the Operation Allied Provider off the coast of Somalia. He then took on tasks with his association as part of Operation Active Endeavor . At the end of 2009 Gumiero returned to the Indian Ocean aboard the Etna utility and took over the management of Operation Atalanta for four months .

From September 2010 to July 2012, Gumiero was Deputy Chief of Staff in the fleet command in Santa Rosa near Rome, then head of the planning department (A3) with admiral staff in the Ministry of Defense in Rome. From September 2013 he served with the General Staff of the Armed Forces; Among other things, he led a working group that prepared the Italian EU presidency .
