Girl You Know It's True is a song by Numarx from the year 1987 , which was written by William Pettaway Jr., Sean Spencer, Kevin Liles, Rodney Hollaman and Kayode Adeyemo. It became known worldwide a year later through the band Milli Vanilli, which was produced in Germany .

In 1987, the five-member hip-hop group took Numarx from Baltimore , were at Spencer, Liles and Hollaman member who self-written song Girl You Know It's True as their second single on. Producers were Bill Pettaway and Ky Adeyemo. It was released on an indie label in Maryland and the following year on the British label Bluebird along with their debut song Rhymes So Def . They also released an album called Our Time Has Come with the two songs. For Numarx it did not bring any significant success and the members soon went their separate ways, including Kevin Liles later became head of the Def Jam label .

The German producer Frank Farian became aware of the song Girl You Know It's True in 1988 and chose it as the first song for his music project Milli Vanilli . In Germany and Austria, Girl You Know It's True in the version of Milli Vanilli became a number one hit. It was also in the top 3 in England and Switzerland. At the beginning of 1989 it was also successful in the USA, making it to second place and selling over a million times. The accompanying album, which was named after the song, is the most successful German-made album in the United States , with over 6 million copies sold . The song and album earned Milli Vanilli a Grammy Award for Newcomer of the Year.

In an MTV concert in 1990 remained with the song Girl You Know It's True , the playback hang machine and repeated endlessly the beginning of the choruses. As a result it became known that Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan had never sung themselves, but had only been on stage as dancers and performers. The actual singers had been Charles Shaw , Johnny Davis, and Brad Howell , among others . Frank Farian then dissolved the project.

Cover versions

After the Milli Vanilli scandal was uncovered, the song's popularity abroad suffered. The two Boyzone members Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch recorded a rap version of the song after the breakup of their band in 2000, which is a satire on the music industry. A single version hit the UK charts in late 2000 .

In the German-speaking countries, where the scandal had not caused such a big stir , the song was still popular and was covered by Centory , Oli P. and Lemon Ice , among others . All three also made it into the charts with their versions.
