Gisela Hochuli (* 1969) is a Swiss performance artist and curator . She won the Swiss Performance Prize in 2014 and gained international fame through her participation in performance festivals in Asia , South America , North Africa and Europe .

Career

Gisela Hochuli studied economics and sociology at the University of Bern from 1990 to 1996 and then, from 2001 to 2005, visual arts at the Zurich University of the Arts , where Monica Klingler was teaching performance at the time . There she came into contact with guest performance lecturers such as Esther Ferrer and Boris Nieslony . With the influential performance art duo Monika Günther and Ruedi Schill , she got to know performance art , also as the art of action, expanded, which also offered her the opportunity to perform at the International Performance Festival Giswil , which was organized by these actors at the time . Since 2002 she has shown her work at national and international performance festivals in Asia, South America, North Africa and Europe. She has her studio in the Progr cultural center in the city ​​of Bern , where she also organizes. She organizes and curates performance events such as the Progr Performance Platform PPP in Bern, which was initiated by Norbert Klassen in parallel to the Bone Festival , Art of Encounter with Boris Nieslony, Marianne Papst and Simone Etter in Basel and was guest curator at the Polish one in 2017 Performance Festival Interakcje in Piotrków Trybunalski . In 2017/18 she is part of the inter-institutional exhibition project Performance Process - 60 Years of Performance Art in Switzerland at the Museum Tinguely , the Center Culturel Suisse in Paris and the Kunsthalle Basel . Her solo performances show a fixed structure that supports her situational work. She plays with the inclusion of her own body, the space, the audience as well as site-specific materials and contexts. «For Gisela Hochuli, performance is the ideal art form for public spaces. With her "Autobiography" campaign, she has relocated herself to her hometown in Aargau and made her search for traces tangible.
