Gitoxigenin is a steroid from the hydrolysis of the cardiac glycoside gitoxin , which occurs in the foxglove Digitalis lanata .

Structure and properties

Structurally, gitoxigenin belongs to the group of cardenolides , a group of steroids that have an effect on the heart and which have an unsaturated γ-lactone as their common structural feature . It is the aglycon of the glycoside lanatoside B.
