The leaf blade is simple, leathery, 6 to 17 inches long and 3 to 8 inches wide, egg-shaped, lanceolate, pointed or pointed with a broad wedge-shaped base. They have an approximately 1.5 to 2 millimeter wide calyx , a 4 to 5 millimeter wide corolla and a corolla tube of similar length as the corolla lobes. The stamens reach to the tips of the corolla, the anthers are 1 to 1.5 millimeters long. The fruits are kidney-shaped, 7 to 10 millimeters long and 4 to 6 millimeters wide, deep blue-black berries .

The species blooms from May to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46.

Distribution and ecology

The natural range is in the temperate zone of Asia in China and Korea. He was naturalized in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, North and South America. The species grows in steppes and dry forests at altitudes up to 2900 meters on fresh, weakly acidic to weakly alkaline, sandy-loamy to loamy, moderately nutrient-rich soils in light to partially shaded locations. It loves warmth and is moderately frost hardy.

Systematics and research history

The Shining privet ( Ligustrum lucidum ) is a kind from the kind of privet ( Ligustrum ) in the family of Olive Family (Oleaceae), Tribe Oleeae. The species was first described by William Townsend Aiton in 1810 .

use

The shiny privet is rarely used for forestry purposes. Due to the decorative flowers, it is used as an ornamental wood , whereby several varieties are distinguished, including 'Tricolor' with pink young and yellow older leaves and 'Excelsum Superbum' with deep yellow variegated leaves and small white flowers that are cream-colored towards the edge. Although the berries are poisonous, they are used in China to prevent bone marrow wasting, for chemotherapy, and for AIDS and hepatitis.
