The Illyric gladiolus ( Gladiolus illyricus ) is a plant from the genus of gladiolus ( Gladiolus ) in the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

features

The Illyrian Siegwurz is a perennial herbaceous plant . This geophyte forms tubers as persistent organs. It is rarely branched and can reach heights of 25 to 50 centimeters. The simple, sword-shaped, parallel- veined leaves are 10 to 40 centimeters long and 0.4 to 1 centimeters wide. The leaf margin is smooth.

There are terminal, unbranched, spiked inflorescences formed bracts included. The sessile, hermaphrodite, threefold flowers are zygomorphic . There are two times three bracts ; they are 25 to 30, rarely up to 40 millimeters long and the tips are 6 to 16 millimeters wide. There is only the inner circle with three free, fertile stamens , because they are opposite the outer bracts. Three carpels have become an under constant ovary grown. The stylus ends in three pits.

The flowering time is in May, rarely even into June.

The triple capsule fruit contains many seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60 or 120.

In Austria it only occurs in the Lower Gail Valley (see illustration) and is considered to be endangered. Here it grows in moist meadows of the colline altitude .
