The gloss willow ( Salix lucida ) is a large shrub or small tree from the genus of the willow ( Salix ) with glossy, bare branches and glossy and almost bare leaf blades . The natural range of the species is in North America. It is used very rarely.

description

The gloss willow is a 3 to 6 meter high shrub or small tree with yellow-brown, glossy, bare branches. The foliage leaves have half-heart-shaped, strongly glandular stipules and a 6 to 12 millimeter long stalk covered with glands. The leaf blade is 8 to 12 centimeters long, 2 to 3 centimeters wide, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, conspicuously long, pointed, with a broadly wedge-shaped to rounded base and a glandular sawn leaf margin. Both sides are glossy, the upper side of the leaf is dark green and bare, the underside is lighter in color and only slightly hairy on the leaf veins .

Cylindrical catkins 3 to 7.5 centimeters long are formed as inflorescences . The bracts are pale yellow and hairy. Male flowers have three to six stamens with golden yellow anthers. The ovary of female flowers is bare, the stigma almost sessile. The glossy willow flowers from May to mid-July when the leaves shoot.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 76.

Occurrence and location requirements

The natural range is in North America and ranges from Eastern and Western Canada over the east and the middle of the United States to Delaware and Maryland . The gloss willow grows in bog and swamp areas on boggy or peaty subsoil in sunny to light-shaded locations at heights of 0 to 600 meters. The distribution area is assigned to winter hardiness zone 3 with mean annual minimum temperatures of −40.0 to −34.5 ° C (−40 to −30 ° F).

Systematics

The gloss willow ( Salix lucida ) is a species from the genus of willows ( Salix ) in the willow family (Salicaceae). It was first scientifically described in 1803 by Henry Muhlenberg . The generic name Salix comes from Latin and was already used by the Romans for various types of willow. The specific epithet lucida also comes from Latin, means "shiny" and refers to the shiny branches and leaf blades.

There are two subspecies:

  • Salix lucida subsp. lucida
  • Salix lucida subsp. lasiandra (Benth.) AEMurray , which was described by George Bentham as a separate species Salix lasiandra before it was assigned as a subspecies Salix lucida by Albert Edward Murray .

use

The gloss willow is only used very rarely.
