The Glas 1700 is a mid-range sedan from Hans Glas GmbH in Dingolfing . The prototype was presented as Glas 1500 at the IAA in September 1963 .

prototype

When the 1300 GT was built at Frua at the beginning of 1963 , Glas also placed the order there for the development of a new four-door mid-range sedan. In the early 1960s, Frua had already developed a successor to the Goliath brand belonging to Borgward , the "Hansa 1300", which was to replace the Hansa 1100. This development was often wrongly attributed to the successor of the Borgward Isabella . However, due to the bankruptcy of the Bremen company, the Hansa 1300 was no longer ready for series production.

The newly developed car for glass looked very similar to that design. Among other things, however, it differed from the Borgward design in one striking point: like the BMW mid-range cars, it had the Hofmeister kink so typical of all BMW models from 1961 onwards . The glass designer Ischinger drilled the 1.3-liter engine for the new GT to 1.5 liters. Together with the new GT, a four-door Glas 1500 with an engine of 1489 cm³ and an output of 70 hp (51 kW) could be shown at the IAA. As is usual with glass, the model shown at the IAA was by no means ready for series production. In the subsequent tests it turned out that the large car with the 1.5-liter engine was much too cumbersome for a sporty sedan. Similar to how BMW first brought out the first model of the “ New Class ” as 1500 and then rebuilt it for 1800, Glas also sought salvation in increasing the displacement.

1700

In September 1964 - one year after the prototype was presented at the IAA - the Glas 1700 appeared with a displacement of 1682 cm³ and an output of 80 hp (59 kW). The engine was derived from that of the smaller models (1004, 1304). The engine block was made of gray cast iron and the cross-flow cylinder head was made of aluminum. The crankshaft had five bearings. The overhead camshaft, driven by a toothed belt, operated the valves via rocker arms that were individually mounted on studs, on which the valve clearance was adjusted. The power was transmitted to the rigid rear axle, guided by leaf springs and a Panhard rod , via a single-disc dry clutch , a four-speed gearbox with center shift and a split cardan shaft . The front wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones with coil springs. The Gemmer steering (roller steering) was supplied by ZF . Disc brakes were installed at the front and drum brakes at the rear and hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers were installed on all wheels . The sedan achieved a top speed of 150 km / h. There were also just under 300 cars that were equipped with their own automatic transmission. There are only very few copies left.

In September 1965, the engine output was increased to 85 hp (62.5 kW), the top speed was now 155 km / h.

1700 TS

Also from September 1965 , the sedan was offered with a more powerful engine, as was also used in the GT models . It developed 100 hp (74 kW) and gave the sedan a top speed of 170 km / h.

After the takeover of Hans Glas GmbH by BMW AG , the two sedans (like most of the other Glas models) disappeared from the market in December 1967, because BMW had its own vehicles of a similar design in its range with the 1800 and 2000 models. A total of 13,792 glass sedans were produced in three years.

Second career

A short time later, however, the Frua bodies reappeared in South Africa . Equipped with engines and chassis from BMW, they were built for years as BMW 1800 GL / SA and BMW 2000 GL / SA , later as BMW 1804 and BMW 2004 by BMW South Africa. But they were not introduced to Germany.
