Role in borate

This Romanian town gained fame through the filming of the 2006 mockumentary Borat , in which it is the setting for the fictional Kazakh "Kuzcek", the hometown of the reporter Borat, which according to the actor Sacha Baron Cohen is near Almaty .

The villagers complained that they were paid just 15 lei , the equivalent of just under 5 euros , per day to film, which, according to 20th Century Fox, is twice the usual local wage. Some stated that they had not received any payment: “We want to sue. The whole world is laughing at us. They filmed us without paying us. ”(Marin Marcel opposite the Reuters news agency ). This contrasts with the statement by Gregg Brilliant, a press spokesman for the production company, that both 20th Century Fox and Sacha Baron Cohen each donated $ 5,000 to the city and also bought computers, school supplies and office supplies. Furthermore, the real intention for the shooting was withheld from the residents and instead the speech was made of recordings for a documentary about the poverty and hardship of village life, which 20th Century Fox denies. The residents of Glod feared being discriminated against because of the negative impact on the country's image due to the footage from their village. As a result, a growing number of Glod residents sought legal action against Cohen and the movie's producers. On behalf of two villagers, a lawsuit against the production company 20th Century Fox in the amount of 30 million US dollars was finally filed by the Munich attorney Michael Witti and his US partner Ed Fagan . However, this was unsuccessful.

The Deputy Mayor Petre Buzea, who is responsible for the region around Glod, called the filmmakers “fraudsters” and emphasized: “They were only looking for negative aspects.” However, he can also see positive aspects from the filming and hopes for increased tourism in the future: “We have already heard of investors who want to build ski lifts and get money from the EU .
