Fieni is a town in the district Dâmboviţa in the historical region Wallachia in Romania .

Geographical location

Fieni lies in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians , in the southern foothills of the Leaota and Bucegi Mountains on the upper reaches of the Ialomița river . The district capital Târgovişte is about 25 km south.

history

The oldest archaeological finds on the territory of the present city date from the Bronze Age . Fieni itself was first mentioned in a document in 1532. The place was characterized by rural areas for a long time. From 1865 he was part of the Moțăieni municipality . In 1912 the railway line through Fieni went into operation. In 1914 a cement factory was opened. In 1923 Fieni became an independent municipality, and in 1968 it was elevated to the status of a city. In 2002, the German company HeidelbergCement took over the majority of the shares in the Romcif Fieni cement factory and has been known as HeidelbergCement Romania ever since . Today (2009) this is still one of the most important employers in the city. Other important branches of business are agriculture (especially fruit growing and cattle breeding) and tourism.

In 1930 about 2150 people lived in the area of ​​today's city. At the 2002 census, Fieni had 7,701 people, including 7,681 Romanians and 12 Roma . About 6300 lived in the city proper, the rest in the two incorporated villages.

traffic

Fieni lies on the railway line from Târgovişte to Pietroşița . Around eight local and express trains run in both directions every day. Some of the trains run continuously via Târgovişte to Titu or Bucharest . The national road ( drum național ) DN 71 from Tărtăşeşti to Sinaia runs through the city .
