history

Moreni oil field in the 1920s

Moreni was first mentioned in a document in 1584. After various names such as Moarile , Moara Rateșului , Moara Nouă , or Moara Sasului , the place has been known under its current name since 1661. In 1691 petroleum was found in Moreni . It was the first place in present-day Romania and the third in the world where this happened. In the 20th century, the oil deposits were developed through drilling. In 2003 Moreni was declared a city.

One of the oil pioneers was Anton Raky , who, together with Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck , secured shares in the Romanian oil industry in 1904 by founding the company Câmpina Moreni .

economy

The oil production since the discovery of deposits represents a central role and is still of economic relevance for the city. There are also some mechanical engineering companies in the city, such as the military vehicle manufacturer Automecanica Moreni .
