Răcari (until 1911 Podul Bărbierului ) is a town in the Dâmbovița district in Great Wallachia in Romania .
location
Răcari is located in the Wallachian Plain . The district capital Târgovişte is located about 40 km northwest, the state capital Bucharest 35 km southeast.
history
Răcari was first mentioned in a document in 1725. For a long time the place was characterized by rural areas; it was also about halfway between Bucharest and Târgovişte, the then two most important cities in Wallachia . This favored the development of trade. In 1948 Răcari was declared a town, but this status was revoked two years later. From the 1950s to 1968, the place within the then administrative structure of Romania was the seat of a Rajon . Răcari has been a town again since 2005.
The most important branches of industry are agriculture, metal and wood processing and textile production.
population
In 1930 there were around 3,000 people living in what is now the city. In the 2002 census there were 6,892 inhabitants registered in the city, including 6,741 Romanians , 147 Roma , three Romanian Germans and one Jew . Around 2500 lived in Răcari itself, the rest in the seven incorporated villages.
