Glovico was a language learning platform that went online in May 2010 and on which people from developing countries could offer language lessons in their mother tongues via Skype . Finally, 20 languages are offered: Amharic , Arabic , Brazilian Portuguese , Chinese , English , French , Hindi , Kurdish , Marathi , Mongolian , Nepali , Oriya , Pashto , Spanish , Swahili , Tagalog , Thai , Tigrinya , Urdu and Wolof . There were 2 permanent and approx. 5 freelance employees working on the portal. About 300 language lessons were taught per month.
concept
Glovico was a Web 2.0 website . The operator was a startup company based in Hamburg . The site offered an online community of native speakers from developing countries who give language lessons via Skype for a fee. The teachers set their own hourly price and Glovico took a commission of € 2 per hour, which was mainly used to finance the processing of the money transfer.
The company saw itself as a social business with the aim of creating new income opportunities in developing countries and promoting intercultural dialogue . In addition to offering language courses, Glovico also organized video conferences in schools, in which students discussed the challenges and opportunities of globalization with people from developing countries.
Some of the teachers on Glovico were trained teachers, but native speakers without didactic training were also able to teach there. Basic qualifications for admission to the platform in the context of an interview were English skills, reliability and a stable internet connection. As a further quality assurance measure, the students rated their teachers on whether they were punctual, competent and friendly, as well as whether the internet connection was good and whether the teacher had a strong accent.
Prizes and awards
Glovico was awarded in May 2011 as a place in the land of ideas, as well as a workshop N project of the Council for Sustainable Development. In addition, the founder Tobias Lorenz was named "Responsible" by the Robert Bosch Foundation and awarded the "Filippas Engel" prize.
The American technology blog Mashable considers Glovico one of eight technologies that improve education.
Failure of the platform
In the meantime, a message on the former website informs about the end of the offer: "Technical challenges, family obligations and, last but not least, the lack of financial sustainability have unfortunately made it impossible for us, even in voluntary operations, to continue operating the platform."
