The Gmoakeller is a Viennese tavern in the 3rd Vienna district highway , Am Heumarkt 25, with celebrity guest list and contemporary historical and cultural importance.

A typical tavern on the Heumarkt

The Gmoakeller is one of the oldest inns in Vienna. The residential buildings at Am Heumarkt No. 15 to 25 were built by master builder Anton Ölzelt from 1852 to 1858 as part of the city's expansion . Crown Prince Rudolf and Mary Vetsera are said to have met secretly in the Gmoakeller, which is why the restaurant was previously called Zum Kronprinzen .

From 1894 the restaurant was run by Franz Wimmer, who also ran the buffet in the Viennese ice skating club opposite . Before 1940, Andreas Wetzer acquired the Wimmer zum Kronprinzen inn and began trading in wine from Gols in Burgenland , which is why the inn was also called the Golser Gmoa cellar .

In the years after World War II , Joe Zawinul and Fatty George played jazz in the basement. The Hot Club Vienna with the founder Hans Koller had its domicile here.

After the Second World War, Andreas Wetzer's sister Maria Herzog came to Vienna from Sopron with one of her daughters, Grete (who later became the legendary Gmoa landlady Grete Novak) . In the course of the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, her three sisters Mitzi, Hedi and Gizi followed with their relatives to the relatives who were already living in Vienna. That is why Hungarian was the colloquial language in the kitchen, but in the dining room Mitzi and Grete talked in Viennese fashion, as was the custom in the old Ödenburg with the local population. After her uncle's death around 1960, Grete took over the Gmoakeller. At the age of almost 40 she married the first French horn player of the Vienna Philharmonic, Hans Novak, who was 20 years older. After a very short, happy marriage (Hans died of cancer after about 16 months) the inn finally became the center of her life.

After Grete Novak's death, her sister Hedvig Vécsei (mother of the trauma surgeon Vilmos Vécsei, the psychotherapist Zsuzsi, the management consultant Hedvig and the journalist Paul Vécsei) briefly continued to run the restaurant and sold it to Harmer KG at the end of 1999. Sebastian Laskowsky has been a tenant or owner since 2000. The actual basement under the bar was first adapted as a guest room by Sue architects in 2010.
