The Goethe Street is a street in Frankfurt . It runs from Goetheplatz in the east to Opernplatz in the west, parallel to the south of Große Bockenheimer Straße (better known as Freßgass ). It is considered a shopping street for textiles and consumer goods of the upscale sector. In addition to chain stores, there are long-established family businesses. Between Goethestrasse and Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse is Kleine Bockenheimer Strasse with the Frankfurt Jazzkeller , Jazzhaus and other bars. With an average of 2,040 pedestrians per hour (2011), it is the third most frequented luxury shopping street in Germany.

history

The road was laid out from 1892 to 1894 as a road breakthrough south of the Große Bockenheimer Gasse in order to improve the flow of traffic between Opernplatz and Roßmarkt . For this purpose the magistrate bought 37 buildings to have them demolished and to make way for the new street.

Until 1933 there were some galleries in the street that exhibited avant-garde art, the art dealers Ackermann und Sauerwein , which u. a. Käthe Kollwitz led and Heinrich Trittler (owner Paul Schütz, later Karl Vonderbank), who u. a. Emil Nolde, Erich Grube and Fifi Kreutzer ran and the art salon Oskar Hermes.

The original development was largely destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main during World War II. Today's street scene is characterized by sober functional buildings from the reconstruction period and the 1970s.

traffic

Goethestrasse, intersection Rothofstrasse

Goethestrasse has been designated as a bicycle route since 1992 , but is also released for local traffic with motor vehicles. For motor traffic, Goethestrasse is set up as a one-way street from the direction of Hochstrasse and from the direction of Börsenstrasse to the intersection of Alte Rothofstrasse, where individual motorized traffic is diverted south to Junghofstrasse.

Due to its character as a shopping street, the volume of traffic on Goethestrasse is very high. Due to the very high volume of motor traffic for a bicycle street and the scarce parking space at the same time, conflicts between bicycle and motor traffic regularly arise in Goethestrasse.

Goethestrasse is well connected to the Frankfurt local transport network. The Hauptwache high-speed train junction is to the east and the Alte Oper underground station to the west . From 1894 to 1986 the Goethestrasse was used by several lines of the city tram between the stations Opernplatz and Goetheplatz.

shops

Today, apart from owner-managed stores, there are many branches of large luxury brands on Goethestrasse, including: Armani , Bulgari , Chanel , Gucci , Hermès , Jimmy Choo , Louis Vuitton , Moncler , Prada , Tiffany , Versace , Vertu and Wempe .
