The Golden Ray was a car carrier about 200 meters long .
history
The ship was built under the hull number H.8151 by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan . The keel was laid on December 23, 2015, the launch on August 26, 2016. The ship was completed on December 5, 2017. The ship of the Hyundai Glovis shipping company was mainly used to transport new vehicles.
On the night of September 8, 2019, the ship with 4,200 motor vehicles on board in St. Simons Sound Bay en route from the port of Brunswick , Georgia to the Port of Baltimore , skewed and capsized. There were 24 people on board, 23 South Korean and Filipino crew members and a US pilot . After 20 people had been rescued, smoke from a fire that broke out on board prevented the other seamen from being rescued.
On September 10, 2019, 30 hours after the accident, the last four crew members were rescued by the United States Coast Guard after a rescue team cut the hull . Three of the seafarers were in the shaft tunnel , the fourth crew member was in the engine room .
The fuel available on board was pumped out. The wreck is now being scrapped on site.
Technical specifications
The ship was on a two-stroke - seven-cylinder - diesel engine powered with 12,927 kW of power. The engine worked on a propeller .
Three diesel generators were available to generate electricity.
The ship was loaded and unloaded via a stern ramp opening to the starboard side and via a ramp on the starboard side of the ship.
