Gordon Richardson, Baron Richardson of Duntisbourne (born November 25, 1915 - January 22, 2010 ) was a British banker , lawyer and politician .

Life

Richardson was born to John Robert Richardson and Nellie Richardson. His father was a grocer . He first attended Nottingham High School in Nottingham . He later studied law at Gonville and Caius College of Cambridge University , where he earned a Bachelor of Laws ( LLB took off). During World War II he served as a soldier with the South Nottinghamshire Hussars.

In 1946 he was admitted to the Gray's Inn as a barrister . Richardson practiced primarily in the field of company law during this period . From 1951 to 1955 Richardson was a member of the British Bar Council . However, he then gave up his career as a lawyer and moved to the City of London as an administrative officer .

Richardson's financial career began in 1955 with Industrial and Commercial Finance Corporation , a state-owned company that financed small and medium-sized businesses. In 1957, Richardson moved to Schroders plc , a global asset management company . There he was first director, from 1962 to 1973 he was then chairman of the board .

In 1973 he became President ( Governor ) of the Bank of England during the reign of Prime Minister Edward Heath . He held this office until 1983. During Richardson's tenure, among other things, the fall of the sterling during the sterling crisis of 1976, which forced Great Britain into massive negotiations with the International Monetary Fund , the collapse of the Herstatt Bank and other correspondent and settlement banks for the US dollar as well as international agreements and arrangements on debt regulations for third world countries . For banks ailing by the financial crisis, Richardson pushed a rescue program through solvent banks.

During his tenure he was admitted to the Privy Council in 1976 . After the end of his tenure as Governor of the Bank of England, Richardson was from 1984 to 1989 chairman of the Pilgrim Trust , a British charity. He was also Chairman of the International Advisory Board of the New York investment bank Morgan Stanley . Later he was a senior advisor there.

Richardson received several awards. In 1979 he was awarded the Territorial Decoration Medal. In 1983 he was awarded the Order of the Garter . In 1983 he was also appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Gloucestershire . From 1984 to 1989 he was High Steward of Westminster . From 1982 he was also Deputy High Steward at Cambridge University . Richardson was also a member of the Order of the British Empire ( Military Division ).

Richardson died at the age of 94. His death was announced in a press release from the Bank of England on January 22, 2010 by Mervyn King , the incumbent governor.

Richardson had been married to Margaret Sheppard since 1941. He was the father of two children.

Membership in the House of Lords

Richardson was promoted to Life Peer in 1983 . He was named Baron Richardson of Duntisbourne , of Duntisbourne in the County of Gloucestershire. In the House of Lords , he sat as CROSSBENCHER .
