Gordon "Gordie" James Soltau (born January 25, 1925 in Duluth , Minnesota , USA ; † October 26, 2014 ) was an American American football player.

Soltau played nine years as a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League in the 1950s .

biography

After finishing high school , Soltau joined the US Navy and fought in World War II . He was part of the Navy's first combat swimmer unit and was used in Europe and the Pacific . After the war ended in 1945, he began studying at the University of Minnesota . With excellence in college football, he was inducted into the Minnesota Hall of Fame and the Duluth Hall of Fame . He was also elected to the All-Star selection of the Big Ten Conference .

In 1950, the NFL newcomer San Francisco 49ers took him on to his team. Soltau was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Draft , then was immediately transferred to the Cleveland Browns and eventually to the 49ers . In his nine years in the NFL, he made 644 points, 25 touchdowns and 70 field goals . He was an All-Pro in 1952, 1953 and 1954 .

In addition to his career as a player, Soltau worked in sales for an office supplies company. He was also very committed to the rights of NFL players. He was the first president of the Northern California subdistrict of the newly formed The NFL Alumni Association .

After his career ended, he was inducted into The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame . He worked for ten years as a television commentator at CBS and then for another five years at the radio station KSFO .

Most recently Soltau lived with his wife in Menlo Park , California . The two have two sons and a daughter.
