Gottardo Segantini

Gottardo Guido Segantini (born May 25, 1882 in Pusiano , † June 16, 1974 in Maloja ; resident in Samedan ) was a Swiss painter , etcher , graphic artist and art writer.

life and work

Gottardo Segantini grew up as the son of Giovanni Segantini and Luigia Bugatti, called Bice, for the first four years in Pusiano, then the family moved to Savognin . Gottardo's siblings were the later sculptor and painter Mario Segantini (1885-1916) and the later writer Bianca, born in 1886. All three children were naturalized in Samedan in 1902.

When his father died in 1899, Segantini went to ETH Zurich to study engineering. When he met Hans Eduard von Berlepsch-Valendas in Zurich , he decided to pursue a career as a painter and learned to etch from Hermann Gattiker . Segantini then moved to Maloja, where he used his father's studio. In 1907 he married Charlotte Poertner (1852–1912) from Darmstadt.

Segantini became known for his landscapes, etchings and writings. During his life Segantini lived and worked in Maloja, Rome , Zurich and Germany . He found his final resting place in the Maloja cemetery.
