Gottfried Backhaus

Gottfried Fritz Backhaus (born October 11, 1958 in Merseburg ) is a German politician (non-party, formerly AfD and The Blue Party ) and has been a directly elected member of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt since 2016 .

Life

In 1967 and 1974 the family of Gottfried Backhaus was relocated due to the brown coal mining.

According to his own statements, Backhaus was not allowed to do a high school diploma in the GDR , although he was the best in his class , because he was a committed Protestant Christian. He worked as a precision mechanic in the chemical combine. Backhaus gave up this position in 1990 and then worked as a self-employed driving instructor. He also worked as a self-taught organ builder.

He had been unemployed since 2013 and received unemployment benefit II .

Backhaus is married and has four grown children. As his denomination he specifies "evangelical- evangelical ".

In 1989 Gottfried Backhaus was one of the co-founders of the local branch of the New Forum and was a non-party local politician.

In summer 2013 he joined the Alternative für Deutschland . In the state elections in 2016, he achieved the best constituency result of his party with 33.1 percent of the first votes in the constituency of Querfurt and entered the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt as a directly elected member .

Backhaus belonged to the AfD parliamentary group . In the 7th electoral term he was the church political spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group and one of the twelve secretaries who support the state parliament president in leading the plenary sessions. The office of ecclesiastical policy spokesman, as well as the functions in the committees for education and agriculture, was withdrawn from him in mid-May 2017 by the AfD parliamentary group.

On June 2, 2017, Backhaus resigned from the AfD parliamentary group. He justified his resignation with growing extreme and radical attitudes and actions in the group. His parliamentary exit was the second within a few days: Similar to Sarah Sauermann , who had left the parliamentary group shortly before him, Backhaus stated that moderate members who criticized the developments, undemocratic procedures and discrimination by the state and parliamentary group leader André Poggenburg would experience.

Backhaus resigned from the AfD on October 17, 2017. In January 2018, he announced that he would join the Blue Party , which was dissolved in late 2019.
