Gottfried Finckelthaus
Gottfried Finckelthaus (born February 23, 1614 in Leipzig , † August 4, 1648 in Budissin ) was a German lyric poet and songwriter of the Baroque .
Life
Finckelthaus was the son of the famous Leipzig lawyer Sigismund Finckelthaus , who became the rector's office of the university shortly after Gottfried's birth. At the age of fourteen the gifted boy was enrolled in the law faculty. Other young poets such as Christian Brehme and Paul Fleming were studying in Leipzig at the time and became friends with him. In 1629 he obtained the legal bachelor's degree and in 1633 the master’s degree. In 1639 he moved to Hamburg, where he met Fleming again, and on to the Netherlands to embark for Brazil, from where he was only to return to his Saxon homeland in 1641. After a few years in Leipzig and Dresden, he was finally appointed as Chamber Procurator in Budissin in 1647, where he died in 1648 at the age of only 34. His work consists primarily of secular and spiritual songs, which enjoyed great popularity and had many editions.
Finckelthaus also wrote under the Latinized pseudonym Theopacius Oecolampadius.
