Gottfried Theodor Stichling

Gottfried Bernhard Wilhelm Theodor Stichling (born June 14, 1814 in Weimar ; † June 22, 1891 ibid) was a Grand Ducal Saxon civil servant and most recently Minister of State of the Thuringian Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach .

Life

Gottfried Theodor Stichling was born as the son of Constantin Stichling, the Chamber Director of the Grand Duke of Saxony, and his second wife Luise von Herder . As the son of the high Weimar civil servant and grandson Johann Gottfried von Herders , Gottfried Theodor Stichling was given to Prince Carl-Alexander as a playmate as a small child and was able to take part in the upbringing and instruction of the prince, who was about the same age, and thus the basis for a good personal one from an early age Establish a relationship of trust with the future Grand Duke.

As Minister of State, Gottfried Stichling received four honorary doctorates from the University of Jena (1858, twice in 1886, 1890).

Professional activity

Stichling was initially hired as a Grand Ducal secret trainee lawyer in the Finance Department in the State Ministry. In 1843 he moved up to the position of the first secret trainee and was thus also responsible for preparing the government's correspondence with the state parliament. As a result, he was particularly involved in the modernization of the still predominantly rural constitutional law. a. charged with drafting the Rentenbank Act. (As in other states, in Saxony-Weimar the obligation of farmers to make payments in kind to the landlords, which is common everywhere in Germany, was to be abolished. Rentenbanks were founded to process the compensation to be paid to the landlords .) In March 1848 - in the course of the revolutionary unrest of that year - the government in Weimar was reorganized. Some ministers resigned and stickleback rose to the position of state councilor. He became director of the presidential department of the ministry. He was responsible for the affairs of the grand ducal house, for questions of the state constitution, for the conduct of state correspondence and thus for Sachsen-Weimar's statements on questions of the German Confederation and the Federal Constitution, for military matters, for leading negotiations with the state parliament, but also responsible for press affairs, the University of Jena and the state archives. He also represented the Grand Duchy in important negotiations. He conducted negotiations with the diocese of Fulda and with the Electorate of Hesse about the disputed assets of the former department of Fulda , represented the Grand Duchy in Vienna in 1857 at the coin conference that met there and conducted negotiations with neighboring states about railway and telegraph lines (see also Werrabahn ) covering the area Sachsen-Weimars should lead and prepared the corresponding state treaties.

Freemasonry
