Gottfried W. Stix

Gottfried W. Stix (born April 6, 1911 in Vienna ; † September 24, 2010 ) was an Austrian poet and literary historian.

Life

Gottfried W. Stix was born the son of a judge and later notary. He attended the Benedictine grammar school in Kremsmünster. He studied at the University of Vienna and graduated with a Dr. phil. from. In 1936 he received scholarships for Perugia and Rome. During the Second World War he was an armed forces interpreter for Italian in Belgium, northern France, Apulia and Sicily. From 1940 to 1954 he taught German language and literature at the University of Catania and from 1954 in Rome, where he completed his habilitation and then received the chair for the history of Austrian literature at the University of La Sapienza . After 52 years in Italy, Stix lived in Vienna from 1985 and in South Tyrol during the summer.

After his academic career, Stix also wrote poems that have appeared in three volumes as well as in magazines and anthologies and have been translated into Polish, Slovenian, Croatian, English, French, Italian and Japanese.
