Gottfried Widmer

Gottfried Widmer (born August 10, 1890 in Bern , † February 8, 1963 there ) was a Swiss Protestant theologian , university professor and orientalist .

Life

Widmer attended high school in his hometown of Bern. He then studied at the Universities of Bern , Paris and Leipzig . After passing the state examination in theology , Widmer was ordained as Verbi divini minister in 1914 and received his doctorate at the University of Bern two years later.

In 1918 Widmer was given a pastor's position in Bätterkinden in the canton of Bern , which he held until 1956.

In 1928 Widmer completed his habilitation at the University of Bern, where he became a private lecturer in Semitic philology . He mastered and taught Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and the classical Arabic language and literature. From 1929 to 1960 Widmer gave 119 lectures . In 1945 he was appointed associate professor . In addition to essays, he wrote translations by contemporary Arabic authors, some of whom he knew personally.

Gottfried Widmer died on February 8, 1963 in Bern, he was married and had three children.
