Gotthard Jasper

Gotthard Jasper (born September 24, 1934 in Gadderbaum - Bethel , today Bielefeld ) is a German historian and political scientist. From 1990 to 2002 he was rector of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bielefeld, Jasper studied history , political science , geography and Latin philology in Tübingen since 1954 . He received his doctorate in 1960 with a thesis on the protection of the republic in the Weimar Republic with Hans Rothfels as Dr. phil. A year later he passed the first state examination for teaching at secondary schools.

Between 1961 and 1966 Jasper was an assistant at the new Institute for Political Science at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He then moved to Konstanz as an academic adviser , where he headed the Political Science Department at Center I for Educational Research. In 1969 Jaspers took over the newly founded political science chair at the University of Education in Westphalia-Lippe , Münster department . He was dean of the department in 1970/71 and rector of the college of education from 1972 to 1974. In 1974 he became a professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

In the course of his service, he also took on numerous university policy tasks at this university. Jasper had been a member of the permanent university planning committee since 1975 and was vice-chairman of the committee in 1984 and 1985. Between 1981 and 1983 he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty I. Since 1986 Jasper was Vice President of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He also became chairman of the Standing Commission on University Planning. Jasper has been Rector of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg since 1990 and has been Chairman of the Bavarian Rectors' Conference since 1996. In 2002 he retired.

In 2006 Jasper submitted an expert opinion on the late Protestant regional bishop Hans Meiser , which the Nuremberg city council had commissioned. At that time, the renaming of Bischof-Meiser-Strasse had been discussed in Nuremberg.

Research priorities

Jasper's main areas of work include the history and problems of democracy in Germany. There are also legal, judicial and constitutional policy. He also deals with the question of Christianity and politics. Education policy and local political issues are also part of his field of work.

Awards

In 1995 Gotthard Jasper received the Bavarian Order of Merit; In 2002 he was honored with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Edmund Stoiber presented the prestigious award at a ceremony. In 2003 he was made an honorary senator of the Distance University in Hagen .
