Life

Rabenhorst began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Belzig in 1822 ; He studied botany from 1822 to 1830 at the University of Berlin , where he was licensed as a first-class pharmacist. From 1831 to 1840 he ran a pharmacy in Luckau , besides doing research on botany, especially on cryptogams. Rabenhorst published essential results of the floristic research of Brandenburg and Niederlausitz in these years in his work "Flora lusatica". From 1840 he lived as a private scholar in Dresden , from 1875 in Meißen. During this time he devoted himself exclusively to researching the flora and especially the cryptogams . He received his doctorate from the University of Jena in 1841 . In 1841 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Rabenhorst was one of the most important supporters of cryptogam studies and mainly supplied collections of cryptogams in dried copies. From 1852 he published the magazine "Hedwigia", a series that is devoted to cryptogam history and still exists today. From 1844 to 1848, “Germany's cryptogam flora” was created in two volumes, which were continued after his death as “ Rabenhorst's cryptogam flora ”.
