geography

Grüt is located in the drumlin landscape of the Zurich Oberland.

history

middle Ages

The Wacht Grüt appears comparatively late in documents compared to other districts of Gossau, for the first time in 1267. Its name is derived from the Middle High German term for "clearing". The inhabitants of the village were serf small farmers who had to pay tithes to the knight's house in neighboring Bubikon . As the only part of the municipality of Gossau, Grüt was razed to the ground in the Old Zurich War in 1440. In the next 50 years the village was rebuilt. The effort paid off for the residents, because the soil conditions were well suited for arable farming, which was carried out according to the system of profitable three-part farming. The hamlet of Bönler, which today belongs to the Wacht Grüt, had an interesting special position: Founded by resettlers from the village of Unterwetzikon , it was originally located outside the village of etters on its common land (e) . It is not known when he came to Grüt.

Modern times

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Grüt developed analogously to the other Wachten in Gossau. The smallholders improved their income by working from home, the decline of which in the middle of the 19th century deprived them of their livelihood. The so-called proto-industry created a special type of house in Grüt, as in the entire rural area of the canton of Zurich, the Flarz , recognizable by the mostly continuous window fronts on the ground floor. The windows, usually facing south, let in enough light for home work on the loom or spinning wheel.

The development of house construction in the Zürcher Oberland is closely linked to previous legislation. According to this, only those who could prove or acquire accommodation within the Etter could acquire citizenship of a village. With such provisions, the early village communities wanted to make the influx of foreigners, especially those from the poor, more difficult. The construction of new houses was strictly regulated. So the habit developed that families simply added another part of the house to the existing house for their adult children. In this way, the villages were compacted inwards, creating nested complexes of houses.

Old village center of Grüt

Until the 1830s, Swiss villages used the practice of keeping the number of residents as low as possible and not expanding the settlement area beyond the Etter in order to protect their common property, the pastures and forests (Allmend), from being overused. A not inconsiderable part of the Grütner Allmend consisted - as in the other Gossauer Wachten too - from reed land, which was not suitable for arable farming. Mainly the grass of the litter meadows and the peat, which served as fuel, were used here. During the Second World War , a large part of this reed landscape in Gossau was meliorated as part of the cultivation battle and converted to arable land. Only a few remains are left, in Grüt the Seewadel, which is now a nature reserve.

From 1950 onwards, Grüt experienced explosive population growth, not least thanks to its location near Wetzikon, which has railway connections to the cities of Zurich and Rapperswil. The population tripled within 20 years. As a result, the townscape changed significantly, even if growth has now subsided. While some of the old Flarze with their characteristic home worker windows can still be seen in the old village center of Grüts, the Gossau district is now characterized by numerous new housing developments.
