The Grabkogel ( 3,052  m above sea level ) is a mountain in the Ötztal Alps in Tyrol .

Location and surroundings

The Grabkogel is located in the Weißkamm at the end of the Pitztal valley . The closest place is Mandarfen, 5 kilometers to the north, in the municipality of St. Leonhard in Pitztal . The Mittelbergferner and Brunnenkogelferner glaciers stretch to the south of the Grabkogel and are made accessible for winter sports by the Pitztaler Gletscherbahn . The neighboring mountain in the west is the 3162  m high Mittagskogel . About two kilometers northeast of the Grabkogel lies the Braunschweiger Hut ( 2759  m) the most important alpine base for climbing the mountain.

Paths to the summit

The normal route to the Grabkogel leads pathless but not difficult through the southern flank. It can be reached from the Braunschweiger Hütte or from the mountain station of the glacier cable car and is considered frequent. The ascent over the eastern flank, like the transition to the Mittagskogel, has difficulty level II (UIAA) . The northeast edge is much more difficult with difficulty level V.

The first ascent was made by unknown climbers on January 2, 1873.
