County of Avignon

A county of Avignon existed in the 10th century, before the county of Provence was formed from the estate of the Kingdom of Lower Burgundy - with Avignon and the county of Arles as the heartland.

Counts of Avignon were:

Bosos II. Descendants are the Counts of Provence, the Margraves of Provence and the Counts of Forcalquier (to whom Avignon then belonged until 1209); their heirs are the Counts of Toulouse and the Counts of Barcelona.

After the formation of Provence, Avignon was downgraded to a vice-county. The representatives of the counts ruled here until the end of the 12th century. The city of Avignon became independent after the commune was founded in 1129 with the approval of the Count of Forcalquier .

The rule of Avignon was later divided for a long time between Charles of Anjou as Count of Provence and Alfons of Poitiers as Count of Toulouse . When King Philip IV inherited Alfonso's part in 1290 to Charles II of Anjou , the area was reunited. Charles's great-granddaughter Johanna I of Naples sold Avignon on June 19, 1348 for 80,000 florins to Pope Clement VI.
