Graham Buckland

Graham Buckland (born January 27, 1951 in Weymouth , Dorset , England ) is a British conductor and composer .

Life

Buckland was born the son of a farmer and attended Hardye's School in Dorchester . In 1970 he entered George Hurst's conducting class for the first time at Canford Summer School. Hurst remained his mentor until 1987.

From 1970 he studied composition / musicology / piano at Corpus Christi College Cambridge and spent a year at the London Opera Center. In 1974 he won a scholarship from the British Council for an in-depth study of the operas of Janacek with František Jílek in Brno ( Brno , then Czechoslovakia ).

He stayed for three years and combined his studies with his first engagements as a solo coach at the National Theater in Prague and as Kapellmeister at the State Theater Ústí-nad-Labem (Aussig). Further theater stations in Nuremberg , Hanover and Oldenburg followed. He became chief conductor in Hildesheim and in 1991, on the recommendation of Jílek, in Brno. He is a guest conductor u. a. Performed in Brussels, Glasgow, Boise (USA), Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Hanover, Essen, Ulm and Hildesheim.

In 1995 he was appointed director of the Regensburg University Orchestra , where he worked until 2016. He has been the university music director there since 2003 .

In Regensburg he founded additional institutions such as the university chamber orchestra , the chamber choir and the chamber opera , as well as a baroque orchestra and numerous smaller ensembles.

In 2001 he founded the Kallmünz festival with a focus on contemporary music , which in 2010 presented the first festival entitled überBücken in cooperation with the city and the University of Regensburg .

In 2006 he was awarded the Pro Arte Regensburg University Foundation's cultural prize.

From 1997 to 2012 Buckland taught orchestral conducting at the University for Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg . He is also active as a composer and editor, mainly at Bärenreiter-Verlag .

He is married to the painter Andrea Buckland and has four children.
