history
Originally the area was inhabited by Maliseet Indians . Later, Acadians and Loyalists settled and founded the towns of Grand Bay and Westfield . The name Grand Bay was chosen by the French explorer and colonizer Samuel de Champlain because of its proximity to the Bay of Fundy and the impressive view of the surrounding waters. It is believed that Westfield got the name from settlers who came from Westfield , Massachusetts . As a residential area to the nearby City of Saint John, the region was also known as the cottage country . The main livelihood of the residents was the timber industry . On January 1, 1998, the two places merged to form the city of Grand Bay-Westfield.
Today, the majority of the residents work in the nearby operations of the Moosehead Brewery, the JD Irving conglomerate and the Point Lepreau nuclear power station .
