Viktor IV. (Gregory)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregorio Conti von Ceccano (also: Gregor Conti , date of birth and death have not been passed down), was the antipope to Pope Innocent II in 1138 under the name of Viktor IV . He must not be confused with the eponymous Viktor IV (Octaviano de Montecello) who served as antipope from 1159 to 1164.

Life

On February 18, 1107, Conti was elevated to the rank of cardinal priest of the titular church Santi XII Apostoli under Pope Paschal II . However, Paschal II denied him this title in 1112 after Conti had fallen out with him. Only Calixt II confirmed Conti in 1122 again in his cardinal dignity. During the schism that occurred in 1130 , Conti found himself on the side of the antipope Anaklet II and refused to follow Innocent II .

After Anaclet's death, Conti was elected Pope by his supporters with the support of Rogers II on January 25, 1138, but saw his followers rapidly dwindling. After an intervention by Bernhard von Clairvaux , Viktor renounced his papal dignity on May 29, 1138 after just a few weeks.

Bernhard led Conti and the other followers of Anaclet before Pope Innocent, whom they promised loyalty. In return, the Pope promised to keep her in office and dignity, but broke his promise at the Second Lateran Council and deposed Conti and his companions, for which Bernhard von Clairvaux severely criticized him.

No further information is known about Conti's biography or his death.
