Grégory Vignal (born July 19, 1981 in Montpellier ) is a former French football player .

Career

Vignal began his career in 1998 at the Hérault Sports Club in his hometown of Montpellier. In 2000 he took part in the U18 European Championship and won the title with the French team. Liverpool FC became aware of the young player and signed him in September 2000. In the professional team he made his debut on January 6, 2001 in the cup game against Rotherham United . In the 2001/02 season John Arne Riise came to Liverpool, who took the position of Vignals with more experience. In addition, Vignal broke his foot, so that he came in this and the following season only a few league and cup appearances for the Reds .

In mid-January 2003 he was loaned to SC Bastia in Ligue 1 for the second half of the season. Stade Rennes (first half of 2003/04) and Espanyol Barcelona (second half of 2003/04) were the clubs to which Liverpool FC loaned Vignal in the following season. He then played the entire 2004/05 season for Glasgow Rangers , with whom he won the Scottish Championship and the League Cup; in this season he completed 42 competitive games.

It wasn't until 2005 that the Reds released him from his contract , which was actually valid for another year. Vignal did not come to an extension with the Rangers and instead signed with Portsmouth FC in the Premier League . There, however, he could not prevail, and after one season he went back to France in 2006 to the RC Lens. In January 2007, the German second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern loaned him for the second half of the 2006/07 season . He then went back to RC Lens, but was awarded again in the English second division to Southampton FC . For the 2008/09 season Vignal returned to Lens again; In 2009 he was loaned to England again, to Birmingham City . In August 2010 he finally moved to Atromitos Athens .
