Greyscale ( English for, grayscale ') is the eighth studio album of the German synth pop - band camouflage .

Creation and artwork

All pieces on the album were composed by Volker Hinkel , Oliver Kreyssig, Heiko Maile , Marcus Meyn and Jochen Schmalbach; whereby Hinkel and Schmalbach contributed the least with only three and five compositions respectively. All songs were produced jointly by Volker Hinkel, Heiko Maile and Jochen Schmalbach. The album was mastered under the direction of Sven Geiger. The album was released under the Bureau B music label. On the brown-gray cover of the album - in addition to artist names and song titles - a mass of slightly suggested / transparent people walking in a field can be seen. The photograph is by Klaus Mellenthin ; the artwork by Christian Küpker.

Publication and promotion

The first publication of Greyscale found on March 6, 2015, Germany, Austria and Switzerland instead. The album consists of 13 new studio recordings. In addition to the regular album release, a limited "Deluxe Edition" was released at the same time. In addition to the regular album, this includes an additional 180 g vinyl record , which contains a total of eleven tracks from the album and a download link. The tracks Greyscale and Light Gray are missing from the vinyl record . The album is exclusively available with a camouflage cloth bag on the jpc.de website .

To promote the album, the band released audio samples of each song on SoundCloud a month before the album was released . In the February issue of the music magazine Sonic Seducer , in addition to a story about camouflage, a CD entitled Misery was available. Various radio interviews followed such as B. for Antenne Brandenburg , Deutschlandradio Kultur , Radio Eins and SWR1 .

Camouflage live at the Amphi Festival (2014)

When Gray Scale is the first studio album in nine years. The last studio album Relocated was released on August 25, 2006. For the first time in 32 years of band history, Camouflage recorded a song together with another artist. They recorded the song Count on Me together with the Hamburg singer and former Wolfsheim member Peter Heppner . The idea of ​​working together came a year earlier. Camouflage invited Heppner to their 30th anniversary concert in Dresden. Meyn announced Heppner with the words that it would be a dream for him to sing Camouflage's 80s hit That Smiling Face with a certain man . This duet was so well received by the fans that another joint appearance at the Amphi Festival 2014 in Cologne followed. When asked when the fans can hear one of the two songs on CD, Heppner replied on his Facebook page with the words “We're working on it”. It was first announced on December 19, 2014 that Camouflage and Heppner had recorded the song Count on Me for the album together. On March 29, 2015, Camouflage surprised their fans when Heppner was a guest and they sang Count on Me together in the docks in Hamburg .

All lyrics are written entirely in English. The music and the text were written jointly by Volker Hinkel, Oliver Kreyssig, Heiko Maile, Marcus Meyn and Jochen Schmalbach. Musically, the songs move in the area of synth pop . Most of the pieces are sung by camouflage frontman Marcus Meyn and two tracks by Oliver Kreyssig, while Meyn is supported by Peter Heppner on the song Count on Me . Furthermore, the voices of Heiko Maile, Volker Hinkel, Lina Meyn, Britta Medeiros, Anja Raue, the Singakademie Stuttgart and Leon Taylor can be heard in the background in some pieces .

Single releases

Three weeks before the album was released, the single Shine was released on February 20, 2015 . In addition to the album version, the maxi single contains two remix versions of Shine as B-side . An official music video for Shine was released on February 6, 2015 . Half a year later, Count on Me , the joint duet with Peter Heppner , was the second single from the album. A chart entry for both singles has so far been denied.

Reviews

Niklas Forsberg from releasemagazine.net praised Greyscale as a “brilliant” album and awarded 9/10 points. He rates the first single Shine as one of the best pieces on the album. He praised the structure of Laughing , which starts slowly and leads into a gorgeous choir and then slowly ends again. He described the duet Count on Me with Peter Heppner as “breathtaking”.

Charts and chart placements

Greyscale reached position 14 in the album charts in Germany and stayed in the charts for a total of two weeks. For Camouflage this is already the eighth chart success in the German album charts. After top position 13 in Methods of Silence , Camouflage and Greyscale achieved the second-best rating in the German album charts.
