Klaus JA Mellenthin (born December 1969 in Stuttgart ) is a German photographer .

Life

Upon completion of the Friedrich-Eugens-Gymnasium Stuttgart , Mellenthin first took up an internship with the photo journalist Uli Kraufmann. He then did community service . During this time he worked as a photo reporter for the Stuttgarter Nachrichten in the departments Local, Region and for the newly founded city magazine lift operates. In 1991 he attended the Johannes Gutenberg School in Stuttgart for professional training as a photographer and completed the integrated practical period at pro-studios .

With freelance work initially in New York City, Los Angeles, Cairo and Barcelona on architecture, urban spaces and social issues, Mellenthin made a name for himself in the fields of fashion , street live and portraiture . During his time in Paris, in addition to recordings for the music, fashion and travel industries for u. a. Paris Match , Illy Magazin and Madame in Morocco, also added free photo reports in Uganda, Egypt and Kyrgyzstan. In doing so, he combined portrait, advertising and industrial photography with documentary motifs beyond commercial glitter.

The company Rodenstock -Fotooptik portrayed him in 2009 as photographer of the month with three photo series on the areas of city ​​landscapes , Hamburg 2005 and cityscapes , quote Mellenthin: “I am fascinated by people and their stories, I am fascinated by cities and their diversity, I face opposites and Puzzle. So what do my photos show? Quite simply: life. Nothing more and nothing less. ”In 2010 the BFF jury accepted him into the renowned association of freelance photo designers . In the same year he received the German Prize for Science Photography in the single image category . Since 2012 he has also been a member of the English Association of Photographers (AOP), London. To this day, he works in the field of tension between free and applied photography and combines street photography and his documentary recordings with additional intensive studio work as far as possible. Mellenthin prefers the precise point of view of fine art techniques and deals with the subject or the person to be portrayed before the actual photo session. His works reflect less a retouched, digital image than the human contact with the fundamentally always individual motif.

Klaus JA Mellenthin works internationally in the categories of portraits, travel, architecture as well as for the industrial and communication sectors. For campaigns for aid projects, etc. a. he traveled to the St. Moses Children Care Center to Uganda, for MISEREOR to Burkina Faso and to Brazil to the favelas of Belo Horizonte and Vietnam.

In March 2018 he was elected to the board of the BFF and completed the expansion of the definition, which was originally limited to classic photography , to become the professional association of free photographers and film designers. Furthermore, Mellenthin's tasks are to network the BFF with politics and civil society as well as to represent the association through lectures, exhibitions, specialist seminars, etc. a. as part of the annual, internationally renowned photo festival “Horizonte” on the Baltic peninsula of Zingst , at Photokina , Cologne and abroad.
