The Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity ( Croatian: Grkokatolička katedrala Presvetog Trojstva ) in Križevci (Croatia) was the seat of the bishops of the Križevci diocese until 1966 .

history

As the bishopric for the Greek Catholic Church in the area of today's Croatia , the city of Križevci was established by Empress Maria Theresa and Pope Pius VI. allocated in 1777. Before that, the bishopric was located briefly in Tkalec . The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity was built on the monastic foundations of the Augustinian and Franciscan orders in Križevci. It was not until 1801 that the existing baroque architecture of the Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity was gradually adapted to the requirements of a bishopric and the liturgy of the Byzantine rite . Architectural changes were made to the interior and exterior of the cathedral between 1895 and 1897. This architectural redesign was carried out by the well-known architect Hermann Bollé in the neo-Gothic art and architectural style . Inside the cathedral, the iconostasis was designed by the most famous Croatian artists at the end of the 19th century: Bela Čikoš Sesija , Ivan Tišov , Ferdo Kovačević , Celestin Mato Medović . The artistic design of the iconostasis was not carried out in the traditional Byzantine style, but bears the artistic signature of western realism (art) at the end of the 19th century. As a monument, the entire complex is of great artistic importance because, from an architectural point of view, the most varied of styles complemented each other over the course of the historical epochs .

The former episcopal residence houses a very valuable library. Incunabula have been discovered in it in recent times . There are also around 5,000 manuscripts and books from the 15th to 20th centuries in the library. The majority of literary editions come from the 18th and 19th centuries. The most valuable are 42 editions from the 16th century, 180 editions from the 17th century, as well as 70 manuscripts and dictionaries. Specialist literature is available for church history , general world history , theology , dogmatics , canon law , and economics . In addition, there are editions of missals and bravings of the Eastern and Western rites. Around 500 books from the personal estate of Bishop Janko Šimrak have been transferred to the library. Many of these editions were written in Latin , Greek , Hebrew , Church Slavonic , German , Hungarian and Croatian handwriting. Most of the editions that can be found are works by Aristotle , Aurelius Augustinus , Immanuel Kant , Voltaire , Martin Luther , Antun Kanižlić , Ivan Gundulić , Josip Ruđer Bošković and others. One of the most valuable and oldest books is Missal "Missalum Zagrebiensis" from the year 1506. It was in Venice printed.

Also worth mentioning is the "Ambrosii Calepini Dictionarium undecem linguarum" , a dictionary output from the 1627 in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, English, German. In the episcopal residence there is a smaller museum in which valuable liturgical equipment is kept and exhibited. You can also admire portraits of all the Greek Catholic bishops in the reception hall. The Greek Catholic bishop Julije Drohobeczky (1891–1920) deserves great credit for the architectural design of the iconostasis . The redesigned iconostasis was created under his direction. The most important Croatian painters of the modern age were active.

In 1966 the bishopric of the Križevci diocese was moved to Zagreb .
