history

Church of St. Georg and St. Martin in Griesbach
Former school in Griesbach

The place was first mentioned in a document as Grysbach in 1386. The village church in the upper part of the village is one of the oldest churches in the region, it has Romanesque parts and was a daughter church of Neustädtel from 1413 . Even before mining in neighboring Schneeberg flourished, half of Griesbach fell to the noble lords of Planitz , the other half to the Fundgrübner zu St. Georg and through them in 1495 to Schneeberg.

The entire place became a council village of the city of Schneeberg in 1503, from where the administration of the village took place. Like Schneeberg, Griesbach belonged to the Schwarzenberg office in the Erzgebirge district of the Electorate and later Kingdom of Saxony. Mining began in Griesbach late (from 1705). At the beginning of the 19th century there was a school, 44 houses and 240 residents next to the church. Among the latter were 29 farmers and 15 cottagers who made a living from agriculture, cattle breeding and manual labor. The female residents were also engaged in lace making . The first school was built in 1817. In 1839 Griesbach becomes an independent village again. The school, built in 1878, continued to run until 1969. As a result of the formation of the urban district of Schneeberg, Griesbach was incorporated into Schneeberg in 1951.

religion

There are two parishes in Griesbach:

  • ev.-luth. Parish "St. Martin and St. Georg ”. It is the oldest church in the region. The church is a subsidiary of the Schneeberg parish of St. Wolfgang.
  • New Apostolic Church. The Schneeberg New Apostolic Congregation built a new church building in the Griesbach district in the 1990s.
