Grigory Kaminsky ( Russian Григорий Наумович Каминский ; born October 20, jul. / 1. November  1894 greg. In Yekaterinoslav ; † 10. February 1938 in Moscow ) was a Soviet politician. From 1920 to 1921 he was First Secretary of the Azerbaijani Communist Party and from 1936 to 1937 Minister of Health of the Soviet Union.

life and career

Grigori Kaminski was born into a family of Jewish craftsmen in Yekaterinoslav in what is now Ukraine . From 1915 he studied medicine at the Lomonossow University in Moscow. It was there that he first came into contact with communist activists and became a member of the Russian Social Democratic Workers' Party , from which the Communist Party developed a little later. After the October Revolution and the takeover of power by the Bolsheviks in the autumn of 1917, he began a steep rise in the Communist Party . During the civil war he first went to Tula , where he organized the defense against Anton Denikin's troops. He finally became First Secretary of the Azerbaijani Communist Party from 1920 to 1921 , de facto head of government of the Azerbaijani Soviet Republic . In addition, from August 1921 he was chairman of the Baku Workers 'and Soldiers' Council . From 1923 to 1929 he was deputy chairman of the Association of Agricultural Production Cooperatives. Since 1928 he was also the chairman of the All-Russian Federation of Agricultural Production Cooperatives. He was one of the organizers of the forced collectivization of agriculture in the Soviet Union.

From 1934 to 1936 he was People's Commissar for Health, first for the Russian SFSR , and then from 1936 to 1937 for the entire Soviet Union. This corresponded to the post of Soviet Minister of Health. During this time he initiated, among other things, an expansion of drug production and campaigned strongly for the training of young people in medical professions.

In 1937, Kaminski gave a speech in which he sharply criticized the Soviet secret service NKVD and the sometimes arbitrary arrests. Then he was arrested on 25 June 1937 and sentenced in Moscow on February 10, 1938 shot . In 1955 he was posthumously rehabilitated .
