Grimsby Town (officially: Grimsby Town Football Club ) - also known as The Mariners - is an English football club from Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire , which plays its games in the neighboring town of Cleethorpes .
history
The club was founded in 1878 as one of the first British football clubs. When a second professional league was founded in 1892 with the Football League Second Division , Grimsby Town was one of the founding members. In 1901 the promotion to the first division was achieved , from which, however, one had to relegate again after two years. In 1910 the club even had to leave the Football League entirely after the re-election process at the time, but was able to return a year later. Since then, the Mariners , as the club is also called, played predominantly in the lower regions of English professional football. Only from 1929 to 1932 and 1934 to 1948 did the leap into first class again. In 1935 they achieved their best result to date with fifth place in the first division . The 1930s were also the most successful for the club in other respects : In 1936 (0-1 in Huddersfield against Arsenal ) and 1939 (0-5 at Old Trafford against Wolverhampton Wanderers ) the semi-finals of the FA Cup were reached and the 31,657 spectators who flocked to Blundell Park for the FA Cup game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 20, 1937 , remain a club record to this day.
After the end of the 2009/10 season, Grimsby Town rose from the fourth-rate Football League Two and thus said goodbye to the Football League for the first time in almost 100 years. The club was active in the fifth highest division, the Conference National , for six years until it made a perfect return to EFL League Two in the 2015/16 season.
