The United finial ( Polygala major ), also giant finial called, is a kind from the family of polygalaceae (Polygalaceae).

features

The large finial is a deciduous, perennial, herbaceous hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 10 to 40 (sometimes up to 60) centimeters. The leaves are simple, undivided and with entire margins. The flower stalks are shorter than their ciliate bracts . Outwardly, the flowers resemble those of the butterflies and are usually arranged in rich-flowered clusters . They have 5 free sepals , 3 small outer and 2 large inner ones. The latter look like petals , are between 10 and 15 millimeters long but shorter than the crown tube and are known as "wings". Furthermore, the flowers have 3 petals, of which the lower one is larger and has a slit appendage at the front and is referred to as a "boat". The two other petals are small and fused together at the base. The upper ovary with a stylus sits on a stem that is 2 to 4 times as long as it is itself. The flowers have 8 stamens , the stamens have grown together to form a groove. The fruit is a two-lobed capsule .

The flowering period extends from May to June, partly from April to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

The distribution area of ​​the species extends to Austria , the Czech Republic , Hungary , Slovakia , the Ukraine , Albania , Bosnia-Herzegovina , Bulgaria , Croatia , Greece , Italy , Romania , Serbia , Slovenia and Turkey .

In Austria, the large finial occurs only in the Pannonian area of the federal states of Vienna , Lower Austria and Burgenland, scattered or rarely on semi-arid grassland and dry meadows of the colline altitude. It is considered endangered there.
