The great cartilage carrot ( Ammi majus ) is a species of the genus cartilage carrots ( Ammi ) in the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The cartilage carrot is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The lower leaves have elongated or lanceolate, cartilaginous toothed leaf sections.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period is between June and September. The double-golden inflorescence has a long stalk. The 15 to 30, rarely up to 60 umbel rays are protruding. The bracts are much shorter than the umbel rays and usually three to five parts.

The smooth fruit is elongated or egg-shaped with thin ribs with a length of 1.5 to 2 millimeters.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The great cartilaginous carrot occurs in the Mediterranean area. It thrives in olive groves , fields, fallow land and ruderal sites at altitudes from 0 to 1000 meters. The cartilage carrot in Germany is an inconsistent neophyte . In Central Europe it occurs particularly in societies of the Sisymbrion Association.
