The Great Gallows Pond was laid out in the Middle Ages for tin mining in Altenberg in Saxony and is now used for drinking water supply and flood protection . The six-meter-deep lake is now a forecourt of the Altenberg reservoir 100 meters below . The small gallows pond is directly to the east . The large gallows pond is fed by the new trench and the cross trench .
Buildings
The barrier structure of the gallows pond is a dam . It was built around 1550–1553 and expanded several times, most recently in 1943–45.
Freetime activities
There is a camping site at the large gallows pond, rowing boats are possible and there is a swimming pool at the small gallows pond. There are also many hiking opportunities around the lake and a summer toboggan run . In nearby Altenberg there is a mine and the Altenberger Pinge to visit. In winter you can ski here (downhill and cross-country skiing).
