The Altenberg reservoir is a dam in Saxony . It is located near Altenberg in the Eastern Ore Mountains and serves to supply drinking water and protect against flooding. The dam was built from 1987 to 1993 below the large gallows pond and put into operation in 1992. The dammed waters are the Neugraben , the Quergraben and the Sandbach, the source rivers of the Rote Weißeritz .

history

Tin has been mined in Altenberg since the 15th century . In the 1980s, mining and processing were extensively expanded in order to cover the GDR's tin needs as completely as possible. The tin was processed using the flotation process . The increased water demand could no longer be met from the Great Gallows Pond , so that from 1987 the Altenberg reservoir was built to ensure the water supply. In the course of the German reunification , however, the Altenberg tin mining was stopped in 1991 and the original function of the storage facility ceased to exist. It was completed by 1993 and integrated into the drinking and industrial water production system in the Altenberg region. In addition, the storage facility is used for flood protection. The construction costs amounted to around 30 million German marks .

Technical

The dam is a rubble dam made of granite stones with a water-side PVC film seal. Its floor plan is buckled. The dam has, among other things, a duck-bill-shaped flood relief with a 240-meter-long chute on the air side , an extraction tower in the storage space , a hearth wall on the water-side dam foot and a berm on the air side. To obtain drinking water, 5,100 m 3 of water are dispensed daily . The Altenberg waterworks, built between 1995 and 1998, is located northwest of the reservoir. It supplies around 9,000 people in the area with drinking water. (Accessed May 13, 2020)
