The Große Graben is a creek about 8 km long in the Wolfenbüttel district , which begins south of the Asse near Remlingen and flows into the Alte Ilse from the right at Pillowbrück . This in turn flows around 900 meters further from the right into the Oker . Since there is a risk of confusion with the nearby Großer Graben in the Großer Bruch, it is sometimes referred to as Großer Graben (Alte Ilse) .

Geography and water quality

course

The source given in the water quality report of the Lower Saxony State Office NLWKN, which is responsible for monitoring, is the confluence of several field streams south of Remlingen. A tributary begins in the center of Remlingen an der Mühle . The trench runs in very straight sections mainly westward between the hills of the southern Asse foothills through the Remlinger loess basin . It flows through Klein Biewende, takes in several field streams from the south and passes Groß Biewende to the north. In the official online map, the section between Klein Biewende and Groß Biewende is also called Kerrenwellenbach , corresponding to the Karrenwellenweg running parallel to the south of it . There is a bathing establishment in front of the site and a sewage treatment plant below the site, to which around 2500 residents are connected. A partial stream already flows there in a south-westerly direction to the Alte Ilse.

After the confluence of the Scharrenbeck or the Scharrenbeeke , the Große Graben reaches the southern outskirts of Pillowbrück, where the Kisse, which gives the town its name, flows in from the north . It then borders the grounds of the Hedwigsburg manor to the north and meets the Alte Ilse, which closes off the manor to the west. At the confluence of the river there is another stream from the south, while the culvert ditch that branches off there transports part of the water to the north. It passes the Pilsenbrück sewage treatment plant , to which around 6,500 residents are connected. It is ducked under the Alte Ilse and the Oker and flows into the Oker in Ohrum. In the lower reaches west of the Oker the stream is called Riethegraben on the official map . The drainage of the water into the lower area of the Oker serves to protect against a flood backwater.

In older maps and illustrations, the Great Ditch is referred to as Scharrenbeeke throughout the lower reaches , so that the Great Ditch is to be viewed as Scharrenbeeke with the inflow from the Karrenwellenbach and the Kisse.

Water quality

The straight, unnaturally shaped sections and the largely missing bank planting result in a poor rating for the water structure quality . The influence of the intensively agricultural environment, which leads to heavy inputs of fertilizers and pesticides, also has a negative effect. The trenches in the upper reaches often dry out in summer, the fauna corresponds to that of still waters. The water body has opportunities to improve its condition and is given development priority 5 by the NLWKN.

Elbe-Weser watershed

The Große Graben belongs to the catchment area of the Weser . Immediately east of Remlingen, the Osterbeek flows towards Semmenstedt to the Winnigstedter Tiefenbach , which is part of the catchment area of the Großer Graben in the Große Bruch. These waters flow over the Bode and Saale to the Elbe , so that the Elbe-Weser watershed runs directly into Remlingen.
