The 7.85 hectare and up to 7.0 meters deep Plotzensee is (average depth 3.5 m), a north-east of Berlin-Spandau shipping canal on Rehberge Park situated lake in Berlin-Wedding . Its greatest length is 740 m, the greatest width 150 m and its riverside path is approx. 1.7 km long. There is no above-ground inflow or outflow.

Naming, origin, use

The Plötzensee is named after the roach carp fish that lived in it in large schools. The lake is part of an Ice Age lake channel that led from the northeast to the Spreetal . Before 1443 the Spandau nunnery of St. Marien had the usage rights, which were then taken over by the Prussian tax authorities . In 1817 the city of Berlin bought the lake and leased the rights to use the banks and the fishing rights. Originally there was also the “Kleine Plötzensee”, which was partly included in the canal and partly filled in during the construction of the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal.

Legend of the Plötzensee

“Where the Plötzensee is today, there was once a village on a green meadow with a draw well under an old linden tree. The village mayor was a rough, violent man who squeezed the poor people out and got richer and richer and still didn't allow anyone anything. He only left three farmers alone, they were even richer than him.
When he returned home late one evening in the dark, the
stool at the Way of the Cross jumped on his neck and asked to be carried all the way back to the next place. Resistance and cursing did not help. The ghost just laughed and poked Schulzen in the ribs. Shortly before the neighboring town he forced him to turn back and let him trot for a whole hour. It got heavier and heavier, so that the farmer finally collapsed on his knees with a groan. 'You see, that's how you squeeze the poor, you rascal! Forward!' Finally they reached the linden tree again and the stool loosened his legs a little. At the same moment Schulze grabbed it and hurled the ghost with a curse into the draw well. 'Fuck up, you raven, you wretched one!' Then the village slowly sank, the well boiled up, flooded the meadow and filled the valley floor with a billowing lake. The houses sank deeper and deeper, the water rose higher and higher until the church tower was gone. Then the tide stood. In the lake, however, a strong pike prowled about. He respectfully strolled around three fat old roaches. But he drove the many little ones from one corner to the other and never let them rest. It's still like this today. But when the old church bells sound softly in the depths on bright full moon nights, then the pike is hiding in the reed bed, while the roach piously stand still in a wide circle. "

Edge development including leisure facilities

For the main article, see Plötzensee swimming pool

As early as the 19th century, an army sports facility was built on the “Großer Plötzensee” and in 1891 it was expanded into a swimming pool. In the years 1845-1851 there was the first outdoor swimming pool here, in 1877 a guarded bathing area (Auerbach's wave pool) was built on the initiative of the gymnastics teacher Auerbach. From 1923, under the horticultural director Rudolf Germer, the development of the 7.5 hectare green area, including the banks and a promenade, began. The reopened outdoor pool was given a flight of steps leading to the artificial sandy beach . 1926–1928, the two-storey entrance building consisting of two U-shaped parts, including a restaurant, was built according to plans by Walter Krüger and Johannes Krüger . The buildings are under monument protection .

To the west of the Plötzensee there are, in addition to the outdoor swimming pool, also sports facilities, facilities for swimming clubs, a residential complex “assisted living” (former children's home), a youth hostel and a single residential building. The entire northern area is occupied by four cemetery complexes.

Fish fauna

The Plötzensee is managed under fishing law by the State of Berlin. Some time ago it was considered good carp water, specimens weighing 16 kilograms were caught, but much heavier specimens have been observed. In addition, there are tench , isolated asp and various white fish species, especially the roach (roach) from which it is named. Other predatory fish are pike , pikeperch , catfish , perch and eels .

Surroundings

The Plötzensee memorial for the victims of National Socialism is located near the lake in the outer area of the Plötzensee correctional facility .

The former Plötzensee manor district was named after the two Plötzensee lakes .

There are 5 cemeteries right by the lake:
