The village of Großklenau is part of the district town of Tirschenreuth in the Upper Palatinate . The place is three kilometers north of Tirschenreuth in the Stiftland . The village was incorporated into Tirschenreuth on January 1, 1978 as part of the regional reform in Bavaria . Until then, Großklenau was an independent municipality.
Großklenau was first mentioned in 1224 with the names "Klenau" and "Chlenau". The name could be derived from the Slavic "klenn" (maple).
