Meaning of the place name

The name Marchaney is relatively unusual for a southern German town. In the Middle Ages the place was called Sancta Maria Vilere, a place dedicated to Saint Mary. The name Marcha comes from Old High German and means border, it is still included in the later Margrave. The ending -ney should refer to Neigi, which can also be translated from Old High German as hill or hill.
