Gross Spannort ( 3198 m above sea level ) is a mountain in the Uri Alps .
Location and access
The summit of the Great Spannort is located on the high mountain ridge that forms the watershed between the Engelberger Aa valley and the Urner Reuss .
In the immediate vicinity, less than a kilometer to the south-south-west, is the 3,140 m high Chli Spannort . Just under two kilometers to the north is Hinter Schloss , the 3133 m high main summit of the Schlossberg .
From Engelberger Herrenrütialp you can reach Alp Stäfeli with its alpine restaurant , which is open in summer , on an easy, heavily frequented hiking trail, following the course of the Engelberger Aa . The further path leads over the Spannorthütte, which is located in the Schlossberglücke between Schlossberg and Gross Spannort. From there up to the summit, the path is a high-alpine route that can only be mastered with a mountain guide or appropriate experience. (High tour difficulty WS, climbing difficulty II).
geology
The strikingly jagged mountain consists of limestone and brown Jura on a base of gneiss .
history
The origin of the name is unclear. A derivation from Middle High German span = dispute is possible, but span in the sense of wood chip is also possible as an interpretation. The oldest written mention of the mountain and the neighboring Chli Spannort, under the name of large and small Spaneter , dates from 1708 .
In 1867 the Britons John Sowerby , Waldemar Mansell , FE Thomphson and Robert Spankie , led by Uri mountain guides Josef Maria Tresch-Exer and Ambros Zgraggen , climb the Great Spannort for the first time. The group reaches the summit from the south.
In August 1928, a rope team reached the summit for the first time over the difficult north face. It consists of Werner Weckert , Paul Bootz , Mathis Margadant and Fitz Bieri .
On the night of December 28, 1961, there was a rock fall at Chli Spannort. More than a million m³ of rock falls onto the area below Alp Stäfeli. The air pressure destroys the vegetation a few hundred meters high even on the opposite side of the slope.
