The Grotta del Fico is a stalactite cave on the Gulf of Orosei on the east coast of Sardinia. With regard to the quality, quantity and diversity of its limestone concretions , it is unique among the numerous caves in Sardinia.

history

The Grotta del Fico is located at the foot of the Supramonte in the Gulf of Orosei in the municipality of Baunei . The entrance is about 10 meters above sea level in the rock face. When it was first explored in 1957 by the speleologist group Pio XI , Bologna, a large fig tree was growing in front of the entrance, which gave the cave its name. A few years ago, a landslide uprooted him during a severe winter storm. However, its roots reached into the interior of the cave, where remains of it are still present.

The endangered monk seal ( Bue Marino in Italian ) lived in this cave until the 1970s , because the cave has a connection to the sea about seven meters below sea level.

The Grotta del Fico has been a show cave since 2003 , a 445 m long section of the cave system can be visited. For this purpose, walkways with stainless steel railings, stairs and electrical lighting were set up. Numerous stalactites , stalagmites , stalagnates (columns), organ towers and sinter cascades can be seen. Audio guides in different languages explain how the cave was formed and report on its exploration. Most of the grotto, especially the eccentriques , can only be explored with climbing equipment as part of a cave exploration excursion.

Directions

The Grotta del Fico can only be reached from the sea by boat, the jetty is between the beaches of Cala Mariolu and Cala Biriola. The cave is open from Easter to October, weather permitting.
